His interest in making variations of a single motif found a natural outlet in the medium, which allows for the reworking of ideas and records the stages that lead to a final image. While lithography has been his primary technique, Johns has also used intaglio, silkscreen, and lead relief to interpret subjects drawn from popular culture, his earlier work, and the history of art. Johns uses the medium to revisit and vary his subjects, transferring, reversing, repeating, and layering imagery in new and exciting combinations.
When people think of Jasper Johns they usually think about pictures of flags and numbers. Johns completed his first flag painting in He was born in Allendale, South Carolina and grew up with no formal art training but did attend the University of South Carolina for two years.
Inhe moved to New York City but was drafted into the Army. It was revolutionary in that it was simply a geometric design on a large canvas, separate from any emotion.
Over the next few years, Johns used the same approach with other images that were traditionally symbols. In tohe added numbers to his paintings. Inhe did his first lithographs. Inhis work became very abstract with very bold colors with letters and other symbols, such as maps and some difficult to read.
Some of his later paintings were extremely colorful and vibrant while others made you depressed by just staring at them. I also believed his later work took much more skill on his part.
I find that the painting of the United States where it is very colorful and somewhat smudgy is great because it is very pleasing and it makes you wonder why he picked a map to paint.
While some people think that his paintings did not take any skill and anyone could do them, I do not think that. Some people could reproduce his paintings but no one could have thought up the ideas in the first place but Jasper Johns.Johns's ‘1st Etchings ’ –8 include one in which Johns worked over a photo-etching of the sculpture, and the image appears again in a number of subsequent prints.
There has been no painting on this theme (though a real Savarin can was attached to ‘Field Painting’ –4) - it has remained a graphic image from the original sculpture. Jasper Johns: Numbers is the first in-depth exhibition concentrating on a single subject by the artist and includes more than thirty works on loan from public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
